Kitchen Crafts

Flipping through home magazines or scrolling endlessly through Pinterest can make you yearn for a whole house redesign. Who has the time (or money) for that?

Not many people. I don’t!

But still, I like to do a little renovating now and then. Most of us need to take it one room at a time and one project at a time. Today I’m going to talk about how you can inject a bit of your personality into your space with some budget-friendly kitchen craft ideas.

Kitchens can be one of the most expensive rooms to remodel. The most obvious ways to make an update and spend less are by painting walls, the cabinets, or light fixtures. But even that costs money, and lots of time.

If your budget is relatively small, there are still a lot of ways to update your kitchen. If you put a little time and effort into some DIY decor and organization crafts, you can get a new look without having to ask your parents for your inheritance.

I’ve come up with a list of thrifty DIY kitchen crafts – some big (like a range hood update) and some small (like new refrigerator magnets). Scroll down to check them out and then get started on your new kitchen!

Let me know which ones you try in the comments.

Pool Noodle Wreaths to Decorate Your Home

The first time I realized pool noodles could become wreath forms, I honestly felt a little personally attacked by my own lack of imagination. You’re telling me I’ve walked past these foam tubes at the dollar store for YEARS and never once thought, “hey, that would make incredible front door decor?”

But once you make your first pool noodle wreath, it suddenly clicks. They’re lightweight, inexpensive, waterproof, and ridiculously easy to shape into seasonal decor for literally every time of year.

All you really need is a little duct tape, a simple loop shape, and whatever decorations make you happy. Some people secure the ends with hot glue, but I usually grab duct tape because it’s quick and holds surprisingly well.

One thing I especially love is how easy these wreaths are to hang. You can twist floral wire into a hanger, trim it with wire cutters, and create a sturdy loop for hanging on a nail near your front door. It takes about two minutes and saves so much frustration later.

Form Pool Noodle into Circle

And honestly? Once you start making them, it’s hard to stop.

These pool noodles can be shaped into circles, hearts, candy corn, snowmen, and oversized statement pieces without spending a fortune on expensive wreath forms. Some tutorials even use a small nail or support piece inside the foam to help certain shapes hold better.

Whether you love farmhouse style, colorful summer decor, rustic autumn textures, or over-the-top holiday decorating, there’s a pool noodle wreath idea here you’re probably going to want to make immediately.

And fair warning: once friends realize you made these from pool noodles, they’re going to start side-eyeing the dollar store too.

Use a Sharpie to make dots in this unique flower pot craft! It’s so easy that it’s great for kids, for teens, and for adults. . . you just need a few simple supplies.

Skills Required: None. It’s a really easy craft and you don’t need any craft skills to do it. Be sure to watch the video at the end of this post to see the process in action!

decorating clay pots with Sharpies

It’s summer. The sun is high, the days are long, and if your household is anything like mine, the chorus of “I’m bored” from the kids has become the unofficial anthem of the season.

Summer vacation is a magical time for children, but it can also be a challenge to keep those little hands and minds engaged. Today I’m targeting a project that’s not only fun but also adds a touch of personalized charm to our home.

Check out our latest adventure: decorating clay pots with Sharpies.

This flower pot craft is as fun as it sounds. Inspired by the myriad of ways people have transformed mundane items into personalized treasures, I stumbled upon an idea that promised not just an afternoon of fun but also a way to brighten up our home with a splash of creativity.

The concept is straightforward, but the results are anything but ordinary. With just a few supplies – letter stickers, a Sharpie (the hero of our story), and, of course, a ceramic pot – you can create a really cute home for a plant.

flower pot craft idea

The process involves placing letter stickers on the pot, a canvas waiting for its masterpiece, then dotting around them meticulously with the Sharpie.

The magic happens when the stickers are peeled off, revealing personalized messages, names, or even simple, joy-sparking words.

It’s a project that invites imagination to run wild, whether you’re spelling out names for a personalized touch, creating a thoughtful gift for someone special, or even labeling herbs in a new, stylish kitchen garden.

So, grab your Sharpies, round up the troops, and let’s turn those cries of boredom into exclamations of excitement. Let’s create, personalize, and maybe even get a little messy in the process. After all, isn’t that what summer is all about?

Gather These Supplies

  • Ceramic flower pots – from the craft store, but IKEA has some great ones
  • Letter stickers
  • Oil-based Sharpie(s)
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Cotton swabs
  • Paper towels

We put some pretty succulents in our pots, that are perfect for our hot California summer. Hopefully we finally have something that will survive since I’m not great at watering things.

Turn cardboard and yarn into something magical! This DIY yarn wall art features a fluffy white cloud and rainbow fringe—easy, colorful, and fun for any skill level. All you need is an X-Acto knife, tape, and two skeins of yarn to create a cheerful hanging perfect for nurseries, playrooms, or your craft corner.

Skills Required: None. Even if you’ve never crafted before, you can do this project. You’ll be cutting and wrapping yarn. So simple that kids can do it.

DIY rainbow yarn wall art

Let me tell you, if you’ve got two skeins of yarn and a piece of cardboard, you are this close to making the happiest little wall hanging on the planet. I’m talking about this yarn-wrapped cloud with rainbow fringe—and yes, it’s as cute as it sounds.

Imagine a fluffy white cloud made from yarn, with colorful strands raining joy down your wall. It’s like crafting meets sunshine meets your favorite box of crayons.

This project is ridiculously easy, even if you’ve never touched a skein of yarn in your life. All you need is some sturdy cardboard (at least 1/16” thick so it doesn’t flop over mid-wrap), an X-Acto knife, tape, and your two skeins—one white, one rainbow.

DIY yarn wall art shaped like a rainbow

No glue guns, no sewing, no stress. Just some slicing, wrapping, and a little bit of “wow, I’m actually doing this!”

What I love about this yarn wall art—besides the fact that it’s budget-friendly and beginner-approved—is that it’s totally customizable. Want a neon cloud? Go for it. Feeling pastel? Do your thing.

Plus, this is one of those recycled crafts you can totally zone out to while catching up on your latest binge-watch. The hardest part? Stopping at just one.

Ready to turn some cardboard into cloud-core magic? Let’s do this.

  • Begin wrapping the yarn around the cloud shape. You're going to stick the skein through the shape and back around, pulling somewhat snugly and pushing the yarn together to cover the shape.
Alternatively, you can cut multiple lengths of yarn, taping and wrapping as you go.
At the corners you will need to wrap more layers of yarn to cover the area.

  • Continue to wrap the entire shape until the top is completely covered with white yarn and no cardboard is showing through.

  • Now you're going to switch to the rainbow yarn. Cover the bottom part of the cloud shape with the yarn as you did before.

  • Once done, you're going to make large tassels using the rainbow yarn. Cut about twenty (20) 36" lengths of yarn to make one tassel. I cut enough for seven of them.

  • To attach each tassel, place each bundle of lengths of yarn down in half on the work surface. Place the cloud on top.

  • Bring the ends around through the loop, even out, and tighten to create a tassel. Repeat across the bottom. Your cloud is ready to hang.

Notes

When you’re going around a curve with your craft knife, it’s easier to move the surface below the knife than the knife itself. Trust me – try it!

How to Hang Your Yarn Art

All you’ll need are some thumbtacks or finishing nails. Just spread the yarn apart in one area and hammer into the wall! You’ll only need 2 – 3, so there will only be a few small holes in the wall.
Of course if you don’t want holes in the wall, use Velcro Command strips. This art is so lightweight!
