Discover the best reclaimed wood projects for rustic home decor, including coffee tables, shelves, benches, barn doors, pallet wood ideas, and more!

Reclaimed Wood Projects

I never used to notice old wood.

Then one day I started spotting pallets behind stores, weathered boards near dumpsters, rough beams at salvage yards, and random scraps sitting on curbs during cleanup week. Suddenly I realized reclaimed wood projects are basically everywhere once your brain starts looking for them.

And honestly? It becomes a problem.

Because now every old project, broken fence, or stack of lumber starts looking like “potential.”

The best part about salvaged wood is the character. New boards are nice, sure, but old wood has personality already built in. Nail holes, worn edges, rough grain, splits, faded paint, old stains . . . all of those imperfections make projects feel warm and lived-in instead of factory fresh.

Plus wood is expensive now. Reusing old lumber just makes sense.

A lot of people start with pallets because they’re easy to find, but there are so many other sources too:

  • barn wood
  • fence boards
  • deck scraps
  • old cabinets
  • demolished furniture
  • salvaged beams
  • leftover construction lumber

That history is what gives reclaimed wood projects their charm.

Now, before you start dragging home every sketchy board you see behind a grocery store, there are a few things to know. Old wood can hide nails, staples, and damaged spots, so de-nailing and trimming rough edges is important before starting any DIY build.

You’ll also want to check for cracks, rot, or major splits before cutting.

But honestly? Once you start working with upcycled wood, it’s hard to stop. There’s something ridiculously satisfying about giving old materials new life instead of throwing them away.

And the projects themselves range from beginner-friendly shelves all the way up to giant dining tables and barn doors that completely transform a room.

Personally, I’m obsessed with the coffee table and hose holder/planter. But the candle holder is dangerously tempting too.

Okay fine. I basically want to make all of these.

Where to Get Reclaimed Wood

Let me share some pro tips. You could buy it, but why spend when you can get it for free?

Yes, you heard that right. Free.99! Check Freecycle, community Facebook groups, or even Craigslist. You might be surprised at what people are willing to part with.

And here’s a fun tip: take a stroll behind your local grocery or furniture store. Spot any wood?

Politely ask the manager if you can take it off their hands – remember, sneaking it out is not an option unless you fancy starring in the next viral security camera footage!

Also, don’t forget to give your local contractors a buzz. They often have surplus wood from remodeling projects.

diy creative plant stands with free plans

Some people accessorize with throw pillows.

Other people slowly transform their homes into indoor jungles and pretend they’re “just getting one more plant.”

I, unfortunately, fall into the second category.

The problem is that once you start collecting plants, you realize very quickly that setting pots directly on the floor looks… sad. Random. Slightly chaotic. Your leafy babies deserve better.

That’s where these DIY plant stands come in.

Whether you want something modern, boho, budget-friendly, space-saving, or sturdy enough for outdoor plants on the patio, there’s a project here that works. Some are simple enough for beginners, while others look surprisingly high-end once finished.

And honestly? A great pedestal or shelf can completely change how your plants look in a room.

This list includes everything from hanging displays and tabletop risers to rolling carts, ladder shelves, and modern wood builds. There are ideas for smaller plants, large plant varieties, apartments, patios, and awkward empty corners begging for design inspiration.

If you’ve been looking for a clever way to display plants without spending a fortune, these projects deliver.

I’m obsessed with using cement in crafts, and these DIY concrete projects are the perfect way to fulfill my need! I love how modern these ideas are.

Over 25 Concrete Projects for Home Decor

There’s something weirdly satisfying about working with cement. Maybe it’s the fact that it starts as this messy mix and turns into something solid, modern, and honestly kind of impressive.

If you’ve ever scrolled social media and thought, “wait… I could make that,” you’re not wrong. These DIY concrete projects are way more approachable than they look—and you don’t need to be pouring driveways or building sidewalks to get great results.

In fact, most concrete crafts come down to a few simple things:

  • a good mold
  • a basic mix
  • and a place to pour

That’s it.

When I first started, I was convinced I’d mess it up. I mean, this is the same material used for driveways and heavy-duty builds. But once you try a few small DIY projects, you realize how forgiving it actually is.

And the style? That modern, clean look with sharp edges and texture—it fits just about anywhere.

Whether you want something functional (like a side table or bench) or decorative (hello, planter), there are so many types of projects to try.

Tips for Working with Concrete

Before you jump in, here are a few things that make a big difference:

  • Always wear gloves, a dust mask, and goggles if you’re mixing dry materials
  • Use a level surface when you pour—this keeps everything even
  • Don’t rinse excess cement down drains—use a plastic container and let it harden
  • Start with a simple mold if you’re a beginner
  • Try making your own mold once you’re more comfortable

Once you get the hang of it, you’ll start thinking of your own DIY ideas constantly. Are you ready to jump into the projects? Check these out!
