Paper bag crafts for kids to enjoy!

If you’ve got a stash of brown paper bags shoved in a pantry somewhere, congratulations — you’re secretly sitting on one of the best cheap craft supplies ever invented.

Seriously though. Paper bag crafts for kids are one of my favorite kinds of projects because they hit the magical parenting/crafting trifecta:

  • inexpensive
  • low mess
  • surprisingly fun

And somehow children never seem to get tired of them.

Maybe it’s because a simple bag can turn into almost anything with a little creativity. One minute it’s a puppy puppet, and the next it’s a roaring lion, a silly monster, or a whole pretend city ready for storytelling adventures.

I still remember making a paper bag puppet in school when I was little. You know the kind — giant googly eyes, yarn hair that barely stayed glued on, and a crooked smile made from construction paper. And honestly? I thought it was the greatest thing ever.

That’s the fun of paper bag crafts. They don’t have to be perfect.

Littles get to experiment, use their imagination, and turn ordinary brown paper bags into something completely ridiculous and adorable. And once the crafting is done, the fun usually keeps going with puppet shows, pretend play, and dramatic play around the house.

That’s probably why teachers love these projects too.

They’re perfect for the classroom because most use simple supplies like scissors, construction paper, markers, paint, and a glue stick. They also work really well for preschool and kindergarten ages since there’s lots of cutting, gluing, decorating, and hands-on creativity involved.

Another thing I love about paper bag crafts is how flexible they are. You can make:

  • animals
  • holiday projects
  • masks
  • puppets
  • decorations
  • stuffed creations
  • party crafts
  • gift bags
  • storytelling props

There’s honestly no end to the ideas.

And if your kids are anything like mine were, the puppet projects are going to be the biggest hit. Something about slipping a hand inside a paper bag puppet immediately turns children into tiny comedians and theatrical masterminds.

You’ll see a lot of puppet inspiration below because they’re perfect for so many things: class activities, rainy afternoons, birthday parties, and creativity-filled weekends.

A few of these projects even include a free printable template to make things easier for busy parents and teachers.

So grab those brown paper bags, pull out the construction paper and glue stick, and let’s make something fun.

Find creative pool noodle wreath ideas for every season, including farmhouse decor, holiday wreaths, and dollar store DIY inspiration.

Pool Noodle Wreaths to Decorate Your Home

The first time I realized pool noodles could become wreath forms, I honestly felt a little personally attacked by my own lack of imagination. You’re telling me I’ve walked past these foam tubes at the dollar store for YEARS and never once thought, “hey, that would make incredible front door decor?”

But once you make your first pool noodle wreath, it suddenly clicks. They’re lightweight, inexpensive, waterproof, and ridiculously easy to shape into seasonal decor for literally every time of year.

All you really need is a little duct tape, a simple loop shape, and whatever decorations make you happy. Some people secure the ends with hot glue, but I usually grab duct tape because it’s quick and holds surprisingly well.

One thing I especially love is how easy these wreaths are to hang. You can twist floral wire into a hanger, trim it with wire cutters, and create a sturdy loop for hanging on a nail near your front door. It takes about two minutes and saves so much frustration later.

Form Pool Noodle into Circle

And honestly? Once you start making them, it’s hard to stop.

These pool noodles can be shaped into circles, hearts, candy corn, snowmen, and oversized statement pieces without spending a fortune on expensive wreath forms. Some tutorials even use a small nail or support piece inside the foam to help certain shapes hold better.

Whether you love farmhouse style, colorful summer decor, rustic autumn textures, or over-the-top holiday decorating, there’s a pool noodle wreath idea here you’re probably going to want to make immediately.

And fair warning: once friends realize you made these from pool noodles, they’re going to start side-eyeing the dollar store too.

Wine Cork Crafts - 20 Clever Ideas to Try Now

Have you been recycling your wine bottles? What about the corks? Well bravo for recycling, but did you ever think about upcycling them instead?

Wine bottles and corks can be used to make some really creative crafts you can use around your home and garden or to give as gifts. Over on my other blog Mod Podge Rocks, I have a list of clever projects you can make using wine bottles. But what about the corks?

Where to Get Wine Corks

There are so many craft ideas using wine corks and I’m sure you’ve come across one or two while browsing Pinterest. You may have even started saving up your wine corks in hopes of creating something fun.

Well, I have some great ideas for you to try. But what if you don’t drink wine or don’t want to drink 100 bottles of wine to make something? Here are some ideas of where you can get wine corks for crafts:

  • A local wine bar or restaurant is a great place to get corks. There is no harm in asking if you can take them off their hands!
  • You can buy them on Amazon or your local craft store like Michaels.
  • Ask your wine drinking friends to save some up for you.
  • Occasionally you will see them at thrift stores.
  • You can definitely find them at a home brewing supply store. Just search for one in your area.

Prepping Corks for Crafts

If you have used corks, you will want to wash them and let them air dry before using them for a craft. If you purchase them new, you can skip the cleaning and get right to the fun!

Speaking of fun, scroll down and you will see my collection of 20 clever wine cork crafts. PS – Don’t forget about champagne corks. Those work too. Now, which one will you try first?

DIY rainbow yarn wall art

Let me tell you, if you’ve got two skeins of yarn and a piece of cardboard, you are this close to making the happiest little wall hanging on the planet. I’m talking about this yarn-wrapped cloud with rainbow fringe—and yes, it’s as cute as it sounds.

Imagine a fluffy white cloud made from yarn, with colorful strands raining joy down your wall. It’s like crafting meets sunshine meets your favorite box of crayons.

This project is ridiculously easy, even if you’ve never touched a skein of yarn in your life. All you need is some sturdy cardboard (at least 1/16” thick so it doesn’t flop over mid-wrap), an X-Acto knife, tape, and your two skeins—one white, one rainbow.

No glue guns, no sewing, no stress. Just some slicing, wrapping, and a little bit of “wow, I’m actually doing this!”

What I love about this yarn wall art—besides the fact that it’s budget-friendly and beginner-approved—is that it’s totally customizable. Want a neon cloud? Go for it. Feeling pastel? Do your thing.

Plus, this is one of those recycled crafts you can totally zone out to while catching up on your latest binge-watch. The hardest part? Stopping at just one.

Equipment

Ingredients

  • 1 piece Cardboard Mine was about 13" x 19"
  • 2 skeins Yarn 1 white (large), 1 rainbow
  • Tape
  • Pattern click here to use my cloud

Instructions

  • Use a pencil to draw out the design of your choice on a piece of cardboard. You can use my pattern, but you'll want to round out the points with your pencil as I did.
Tip: the key to a design that works well for wrapping is smooth, round (not sharp) curves!

  • Cut out the shape with a craft knife. Be careful not to bend the cardboard if possible. This will weaken your shape.

  • Tape the white yarn to the back of the shape.

  • Begin wrapping the yarn around the cloud shape. You're going to stick the skein through the shape and back around, pulling somewhat snugly and pushing the yarn together to cover the shape.
Alternatively, you can cut multiple lengths of yarn, taping and wrapping as you go.
At the corners you will need to wrap more layers of yarn to cover the area.

  • Continue to wrap the entire shape until the top is completely covered with white yarn and no cardboard is showing through.

  • Now you're going to switch to the rainbow yarn. Cover the bottom part of the cloud shape with the yarn as you did before.

  • Once done, you're going to make large tassels using the rainbow yarn. Cut about twenty (20) 36" lengths of yarn to make one tassel. I cut enough for seven of them.
skein of rainbow yarn and scissors
  • To attach each tassel, place each bundle of lengths of yarn down in half on the work surface. Place the cloud on top.

  • Bring the ends around through the loop, even out, and tighten to create a tassel. Repeat across the bottom. Your cloud is ready to hang.

Notes

When you’re going around a curve with your craft knife, it’s easier to move the surface below the knife than the knife itself. Trust me – try it!

How to Hang Your Yarn Art

All you’ll need are some thumbtacks or finishing nails. Just spread the yarn apart in one area and hammer into the wall! You’ll only need 2 – 3, so there will only be a few small holes in the wall.
Of course if you don’t want holes in the wall, use Velcro Command strips. This art is so lightweight!
