Yarn Crafts That Require No Skill to Make

If you’ve ever wandered through the yarn aisle convinced you should become one of those people who magically understands knitting patterns . . . same.

I learned knitting pretty easily when I was younger, but crochet? Absolutely not. I’ve taken classes, watched videos, and walked away feeling confident, only to completely forget everything twenty minutes later.

So if you’ve ever looked at knitting needles or crochet hooks and thought, “Nope,” this post is for you.

These yarn crafts are creative, colorful, beginner-friendly, and best of all, they don’t require any knitting or crochet skills. You can make every single one of these projects without knowing how to follow complicated patterns or count stitches.

And honestly, that’s what makes them fun.

Some of these ideas are perfect for kids, some make amazing home decor, and a few are the kind of project you start “just to try” and suddenly spend three hours making pom poms at the kitchen table.

There’s plenty of variety too: wall art, weaving, holiday decor, accessories, and crafts using leftover skeins you’ve been hanging onto for absolutely no reason.

Turns out yarn crafts are one of the easiest ways to get creative without spending a fortune on supplies or learning difficult techniques.

So grab your favorite colors, clear off the table, and prepare to suddenly want pom poms on everything.

Turn cardboard and yarn into something magical! This DIY yarn wall art features a fluffy white cloud and rainbow fringe—easy, colorful, and fun for any skill level. All you need is an X-Acto knife, tape, and two skeins of yarn to create a cheerful hanging perfect for nurseries, playrooms, or your craft corner.

Skills Required: None. Even if you’ve never crafted before, you can do this project. You’ll be cutting and wrapping yarn. So simple that kids can do it.

DIY rainbow yarn wall art

Let me tell you, if you’ve got two skeins of yarn and a piece of cardboard, you are this close to making the happiest little wall hanging on the planet. I’m talking about this yarn-wrapped cloud with rainbow fringe—and yes, it’s as cute as it sounds.

Imagine a fluffy white cloud made from yarn, with colorful strands raining joy down your wall. It’s like crafting meets sunshine meets your favorite box of crayons.

This project is ridiculously easy, even if you’ve never touched a skein of yarn in your life. All you need is some sturdy cardboard (at least 1/16” thick so it doesn’t flop over mid-wrap), an X-Acto knife, tape, and your two skeins—one white, one rainbow.

DIY yarn wall art shaped like a rainbow

No glue guns, no sewing, no stress. Just some slicing, wrapping, and a little bit of “wow, I’m actually doing this!”

What I love about this yarn wall art—besides the fact that it’s budget-friendly and beginner-approved—is that it’s totally customizable. Want a neon cloud? Go for it. Feeling pastel? Do your thing.

Plus, this is one of those recycled crafts you can totally zone out to while catching up on your latest binge-watch. The hardest part? Stopping at just one.

Ready to turn some cardboard into cloud-core magic? Let’s do this.

Equipment

Ingredients

  • 1 piece Cardboard Mine was about 13" x 19"
  • 2 skeins Yarn 1 white (large), 1 rainbow
  • Tape
  • Pattern click here to use my cloud

Instructions

  • Use a pencil to draw out the design of your choice on a piece of cardboard. You can use my pattern, but you'll want to round out the points with your pencil as I did.
Tip: the key to a design that works well for wrapping is smooth, round (not sharp) curves!
    cloud design drawn on cardboard
  • Cut out the shape with a craft knife. Be careful not to bend the cardboard if possible. This will weaken your shape.
cutting out a cloud shape with craft knife
  • Tape the white yarn to the back of the shape.
yarn taped to the back of the cardboard
  • Begin wrapping the yarn around the cloud shape. You're going to stick the skein through the shape and back around, pulling somewhat snugly and pushing the yarn together to cover the shape.
Alternatively, you can cut multiple lengths of yarn, taping and wrapping as you go.
At the corners you will need to wrap more layers of yarn to cover the area.

  • Continue to wrap the entire shape until the top is completely covered with white yarn and no cardboard is showing through.
white yarn completely wrapped around the top of the cloud
  • Now you're going to switch to the rainbow yarn. Cover the bottom part of the cloud shape with the yarn as you did before.
rainbow yarn wrapped around the bottom of the cloud shape
  • Once done, you're going to make large tassels using the rainbow yarn. Cut about twenty (20) 36" lengths of yarn to make one tassel. I cut enough for seven of them.
skein of rainbow yarn and scissors
  • To attach each tassel, place each bundle of lengths of yarn down in half on the work surface. Place the cloud on top.
looping yarn over the bottom of the cloud shape
  • Bring the ends around through the loop, even out, and tighten to create a tassel. Repeat across the bottom. Your cloud is ready to hang.

Notes

When you’re going around a curve with your craft knife, it’s easier to move the surface below the knife than the knife itself. Trust me – try it!

How to Hang Your Yarn Art

All you’ll need are some thumbtacks or finishing nails. Just spread the yarn apart in one area and hammer into the wall! You’ll only need 2 – 3, so there will only be a few small holes in the wall.
Of course if you don’t want holes in the wall, use Velcro Command strips. This art is so lightweight!

If you love budget friendly decor, this is your project. Learn how to make this unique yarn wall hanging with a stick and some cute colors of yarn.

Skills Required: None. Even if you’ve never crafted before, you can make this wall hanging. You’ll be tying yarn and spray painting, and all that’s required is patience.

DIY yarn wall art

Our new place has a lot of bare walls begging for some attention. I like to mix things up and avoid putting something framed on each and every wall, so I came up with this DIY wall hanging idea for a change of pace.

I’m excited to share this yarn wall hanging with you because it’s SO easy. You’ll only need to cut a dowel rod down to size, cut yarn, and then drill holes in the ends to attach your hanger. Although I have an option for that if you don’t have a drill!

I love that this wall hanging goes with a variety of styles including boho, farmhouse, modern . . . it’s really about the choice of colors and how you put them together.

You can use items already in your home to help you pick yarn colors, but I also love using Design Seeds for color palettes.

Three skeins of yarn with a dowel rod wood board and scissors

Once you pick your colors, the rest of this wall hanging is simple. Ready to get started on this yarn craft? Here’s how it’s done.

Gather These Supplies

  • Dowel rod – 1 inch in diameter, cut down to 21″
  • Piece of wood or cardboard for wrapping yarn – mine was about 21″
  • Skeins of yarn – 3 in complementary colors
  • Scissors
  • Drill (optional)
  • Saw – to cut down your dowel rod

For wrapping the yarn: I used a board that was about 21″ inches in length that I had leftover from another project for wrapping. Stiff cardboard would also work.

DIY yarn wall art

The finished hanging really looks awesome on the wall. I can’t believe this didn’t take that long to make, and how good it looks! It would be fun to experiment with different colors and styles of yarn.

Ingredients

  • 1 Dowel rod(s) or stick
  • 1 piece wood or cardboard, to use for wrapping
  • 3 skeins Yarn complementary colors
  • Sandpaper

Instructions

  • Select a dowel rod and cut down to size using a saw. Sand the ends to clean up.
  • Begin with the center color. Wrap the yarn around your wood or cardboard about 15 – 16 times. Trim the end.

  • Once you are done wrapping and have trimmed the end from the skein, cut across the yarn. You'll basically have 15 – 16 pieces of yarn together that will be tied to your dowel.

  • Double the yarn (fold it in half) so that there is a loop at the top and the ends are all at the same length. Take the top of the yarn stands and flip it over as shown in the picture, creating a loop with the yarn.
a loop created at the end of the yarn
  • Tighten the loop around the dowel rod toward the center. You can adjust later, and don't worry about the yarn being completely even at the bottom at this moment. Repeat, so that you have two strands of color A in the middle of your rod.

  • Select color B, and then make four yarn strands to put on your dowel rod, two on either side of color A. Finish with color C – using three strands each on either side of color B. You will end up with 12 total lengths of yarn.

  • Clean up the yarn by trimming the ends. You could cut straight across, create a "v" shape; whatever you like. I chose to create a v-shape.

  • Drill into each end of the dowel rod for hanging (this is optional; you can also tie the yarn onto the ends).
hole drilled in the end of a dowel rod
  • Create a braid of the three colors of yarn about 24" long, then feed through the holes and knot for hanging. Display on a thumb tack or nail.

Video

Notes

This project was free as I had all the items on hand, however, you obviously might need to purchase supplies – but I advocate for using what you have.
I made 12 rows of yarn and my dowel rod is 21″ across, leaving room on either side. The size of the rod can be whatever you like. Maybe you want to make a huge statement pieces, or maybe you need something a little smaller to fill a particular spot on your wall.
If you have any branches available to use, that’s a great way to turn this into wall art with a more natural feel. The project works exactly the same but looks a little different on the wall. You could use beachy colors and a piece of driftwood, for example.
For length: keep in mind that you’re going to secure the yarn around the dowel, which will take a few inches off the finished length. My board was 21″ long, and the finished yarn wall hanging is about 19″ long at its longest point.

Create an adorable owl pom pom with yarn and a pom pom maker! This easy fall craft is perfect for all ages and offers endless creative possibilities.

Skills Required: Beginner. You’re going to use a pom pom maker which is relatively easy to do, but I suggest trying a plain pom pom first with scrap yarn. That way when you do the owl you’ll know what to expect from the tool.

How to make an owl pom pom

Fall is in the air, and we’re diving headfirst into cozy crafting with a project that’s as adorable as it is simple—meet our charming owl pom pom!

My kids and I have been having a blast with pom poms lately, but this little project has quickly become our top pick. With just a bit of yarn and a pom pom maker, you can whip up these cute critters in no time!

This craft is perfect for crafters of all ages, whether you’re a seasoned DIYer or just looking for a fun way to spend a crisp autumn afternoon.

These pom pom owl craft is incredibly versatile – make some friends and use them to add a touch of whimsy to your fall decor, or thread a string through them to create unique ornaments or thoughtful gifts.

The possibilities are endless, so let’s get started on this fun and easy fall craft!

Make a Pom Pom Owl

Gather These Supplies

  • Yarn (white and colored yarn, I used black, yellow, brown, and tan)
  • Pom Pom maker
  • Baker’s twine and needle for hanging (optional)
  • Hot glue gun (optional)
  • Scissors

Important Tip

It takes a little bit of “backwards” thinking to see how the yarn pieces end up looking like an owl. But after you make this one or two times, you’ll totally get it and can eventually make your own patterns.

You will only create this design on ONE side of the pom pom maker.

Make the First Eye

Step 1. Open the tool. Wrap the white yarn around the pom pom maker a few times on the left side of the U shape. Knot and tie off.

Step 2. Wrap the black yarn several times around the white yarn you just wrapped. This should be thicker than the white yarn. Knot and tie off.

Step 3. Wrap the yellow(ish) yarn around the black yarn several times, until it’s about as thick as shown. Don’t knot and tie off – just set aside. You are going to wrap this tan yarn around the second eye.

Make the Second Eye

Step 4. Repeat steps 1 and 2 on the right side of the U shape of the tool.

Fill in the Face

Step 5. Now you’ll pick up the yellow(ish) yarn and continue wrapping it from left to right, covering the other eye. Wrap back and forth a bit to thicken the pom pom.

visual illustration of creating the owl design with yarn on the pom pom maker

Create the Beak

Step 6. Wrap some brown yarn around the center of the U shape as shown. This is going to be not only the beak, but the hair coming out the top.

Fill in the Rest of the Head

Step 7. Use the tan yarn to fill in the remainder of the tool. Then close that U and open the other one.

Step 8. Wrap the entire second U shape with the tan yarn to finish.

Tie Off and Trim

You’ll want to follow the instructions on the package for your pom pom maker. usually you tie off the pom in the center off the tool, then cut along the grooves.

Open the tool and remove. It will NOT look like an owl until you use sharp scissors to trim the yarn down and clean up.

Pom pom removed from the pom pom maker tool

Continue trimming until you’re happy with the way it looks. I left the brown yarn on top a bit longer to resemble the eyebrow hair some owls have. I think it adds some personality to this little guy!

Finished owl pom pom

If you’re planning on turn this bird into an ornament, just thread a piece of bakers twine onto a large embroidery needle and insert through the middle (make sure to go through the center thread).Remove the needle, pull to the top, and tie off with a knot.

Baker's twine being threaded through the pom pom

You can also hot glue the twine into the yarn, but it’s not as clean of a look.

Pom pom owl Christmas ornament

I hope you enjoy making this cute owl with your kids. It takes a bit of practice to get everything symmetrical and straight. But with some experimenting and a lot of laughs, you’ll be making tons of little owl friends before you know it!
